Portsmouth Square, San Francisco, 1851

Portsmouth Square was the center of civic life in San Francisco in the early years of the California Gold Rush. No photographs of this side of the square remain, but extensive research uncovered maps, drawings, and written accounts that were used to reconstruct this scene.
